Overview Expand

The 150 year old Walsall Manor Hospital in the West Midlands has undergone a major £174 million, 40,000 sqm extension to create a light and spacious entrance and reception, as well as wards for 136 beds and exclusive new treatment centres.

Working in partnership with Skanska, Lindner Prater installed the entire building envelope including a bespoke façade and roofing solution, completing the project next to the existing live hospital. The hospital was developed to be environmentally sensitive in both design detail and in choice of material, compatible with cost and building performance.

To meet these objectives, we specified compliant finishes for the 11,500 sqm roof, which included PermaTEC EcoWrap inverted hot melt roofing and an aluminium Kalzip standing seam system.

Also included in the package were louvres, plant doors, soffits, cappings, roof lights, GRC lift caps. The main components of the design include concrete structural frame connections to support 15,000 sqm of facades, such as glazed curtain walling, brick infill, and wraparound timber cladding both outside and in the hospital atrium.

A Kingframe system was put in place to hold site rendered insulated panelling. The interfaces between the old and new hospital buildings were designed at various levels of the building.
