As part of the redevelopment of London Bridge Station, Lindner Prater was appointed by Costain for the design, supply and installation of the pre-cast concrete platforms and roof canopies – consisting of aluminium clad with aluminium standing seam roofing – as well as a bespoke structural glazing package.
After early engagement between Lindner Prater’s supply chain and discussions with Network Rail and the architect, a decision was made to invest in and build a full-scale constructability prototype in North Yorkshire.
This was then dismantled and rebuilt in order to challenge the buildability in line with project constraints – enhancing the quality of the build and the confidence of all parties in the solution opted for.
This innovative solution allowed all parties, including the end client, the architect, the main contractor and subcontractors to experience the aesthetic and performance of the end solution whilst still being able to check the accuracy against the 3D model.
To keep to a strict phased timescale for installation and to achieve the complex geometric design of the canopies, the decision was taken to unitise the roofing package. The 6 km platform at London Bridge station was segmented into 1,100 individual aluminium cassettes – all built within a specialised offsite manufacturing facility, which were then transported to site with a ‘just in time’ approach.

Whilst infrastructure projects can often run over, the phased approach adopted by Lindner Prater ensured the project was delivered on time to Network Rail in January 2018.
