Lindner Prater was responsible for the full roofing and façade package for the extension of Twickenham Stadium’s East Stand – the largest dedicated rugby union venue in the world.
The extension was designed to provide 11,000m2 of debenture space for 6800 premium ticket holders in six unique entertainment spaces including restaurants and bars, over six floors. Lindner Prater’s extensive scope of works included the installation of Schuco FW60+XR Curtain Wall, an Aluminum Shingle Rainscreen, a Porcelain Tile Rainscreen, Composite Cladding, a Single Ply Roofing System, and a Hot Melt Inverted Roofing System.
As is common with large scale stadia and leisure projects, Twickenham stadium remained open throughout the construction stage. This meant that whilst the working site was segregated from the rest of the venue, during event periods – which included international rugby fixtures and music concerts – the concourse level needed to be clear of all machinery and materials. In addition, events such as these required the site to be closed for two full days either side to ensure that the concourse level was safe for public use.
“The project was complex from a number of perspectives” explained Paul Webb, Project Director at Lindner Prater. “The curvature of the façade required a large selection of bespoke systems, and the interfaces between the shingle and the porcelain rainscreens and the Schuco curtain wall required hundreds of individually designed and manufactured panels.
“When installing these panels, it was essential to ensure that the preciseness of the engineering setting out was exact, to make sure that the curtain wall followed the radius of the structure. In addition, there were also very specific requirements in setting out the porcelain rainscreen, with each individual panel requiring its own unique structure.”
Paul concluded that, “despite the challenges faced, Lindner Prater’s high quality engineers and detailed design information allowed them to work within extremely tight tolerances, completing the project in a quick and efficient manner.”
